MEDICAL SOCIETIES ISSUE CONSUMER ALERTS: Surveys reveal rise in complications from cosmetic procedures performed by inadequately trained providers

A 38 year old Latino man came to a licensed surgeon in Chicago, for treatment of a brown lesion that appeared on his chest six months earlier.  He previously sought treatment at a medical spa, where a "nurse" tried to remove the lesion with chemical peels and an intense pulsed light device.  He was left with a burn and hypopigmentation.  The man tried to obtain the credentials of the "nurse", but was refused.  The man never saw a license.

This case reflects a growing problem as more and more consumers seek to enhance their physical appearance through cosmetic procedures: complications, often permanent, resulting from services provided by non-physicans.  Complications are on the rise because the casual attitude and easy access to these treatments has taken them out of the medical office, put them in the hands of unqualified providers or non-physicians, as well as put black market and non approved injectables on the market.

The Physicians Coalition for Injectable Safety issued a consumer warning about complications resulting from cosmetic injectable treatments offered in non medical settings by unqualified providers.  The group is an alliance of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the American Society of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Society of Opthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

To head off such problems the organization developed a list of Do's and Don'ts for consumers seeking cosmetic procedures.  Among other things, they advise:

* To make sure the doctor is on site

* Never go to someone's home or a hotel room

* Never to rely on price, and if you are receiving a procedure that costs significantly less than usual, you can assume you are not receiving the best treatment.

* Never be afraid to ask questions such as:  Who will perform the procedure?  Can I see that person's credentials?  What is something goes awry?

The Latest and Greatest on You Tube!

You Tube provides us with a wonderful FREE online medium for great entertainment, often lots of laughs and so much more.  At the request of many of our international and out of state patients who cannot attend our medical seminars, Dr. Slupchynskj developed a series of educational videos for patients and the public on facelifting techniques, lip enlargement/enhancement and African American rhinoplasty.  The videos include actual patient testimonials, numerous before and after photos and footage of the specific procedure, while Dr. Slupchynskyj narrates each step during the procedure.
